Keep Your Account and Your Information Safe

Protect Your Computer
- Install antivirus software: Antivirus software detects and responds to various types of malware. Once installed, be sure to keep your license current. It'll warn you about suspicious websites before you enter.
- Run regular scans for spyware: Anti-spyware software prevents programs from collecting your information. Set up an automated schedule to scan for threats, and only download from trusted sources.
- Keep your firewall turned on: Most computers come with built-in software to protect against network attacks and warn you about a suspicious websites. If you don't have a firewall, you'll need to install one.
- Enable automatic software updates: Most software programs offer automatic updates. Check your settings to be sure this option is turned on. Also, pay attention to any notices that an update is available.
Protect Yourself
- Practice safe email habits: Never include sensitive information in emails. If you receive email from someone you don't know or are not expecting, don't open it. Delete it immediately.
- Browse securely: Use a secure browser, and be selective about the sites you visit (look for "https://" at the beginning of URLs). And always use strong, secure, and unique passwords.
- Guard against identity theft: Monitor your postal mail closely for any unexpected credit cards or account statements. Shred any documents containing confidential information before discarding them.
- Don't give out your personal information: Whether over the phone or online, don't provide any personal information to businesses or solicitors unless you contacted them first and know they're legitimate.
